Friend Loses His U18 Titles, Andjelic Retains Her Crown

2015 CTC Junior Club Closed – U18  |  A year ago it was top seeded Matthew Wong versus second seeded Riley Friend in the final. Wong came up short in the three sets match after taking the first set 6-1 and went on to lose the next two sets 6-2, 6-2. This year's final also showcased the top two players but with Friend seeded No. 1.

In an almost identical set up to last year's final, Wong took the first set 6-2. But Friend came stomping back with a 6-1 second set. Flashback to the 2014 final was in Wong's mind, as history was going to repeat itself. Here was a chance for Wong to re-write the script to have a different ending to this new rivalry. With mustered determination and increased confidence, Wong brave the fight and set the final set in his favour with a 6-1 score. The ending was what he wanted, the under 18 singles club champion crown. Friend, the defending club champion from the previous year, was dethroned. A consolation thought for the fallen champion is that the trend that began in 2010 had seen no club U18 singles champion retained their title the following year. Wong will now proudly add this title to the one he won in 2011 for the boys under 14 singles trophy.

In the semi-finals, Wong managed to defeat Dilraj Phull 6-1, 1-6, 10-5 in a tightly contested match. Friend had an easier time pushing aside Kevin Baumann 6-1, 6-1.

Friend also had to give up his under 18 club doubles title. Zach Amaral, last year's finalist and partnered with Wong, teamed up with Baumann this year to claim the club champion crown. The 2014 club doubles champion, Friend and Jean Paul Pamarang, lost the match 6-4, 6-4. Amaral and Baumann had survived a close encounter with Wong and Phull in the semi-finals. After splitting the first two sets, the match went to the eventual champions in a score of 6-3, 6-7, 10-7. Friend and Pamarang also fought through their semi-finals against Jeremy Arciaga and Gary Ren and they finally won it 7-5, 7-6.

Tiana Andjelic retained her club title in the girls' U18 singles event over Keiko Pan. Pan was also the runner-up in the same event last year. The defending champion had little trouble disposing her challenger 6-2, 6-2.
