The Coquitlam Tennis Club hosts two junior open tournaments annually. NETS uses the Coquitlam Tennis Club tennis courts to host a Rookie Tour tournament. All these tournaments are sanctioned by Tennis BC, and ranking points are awarded except for the Rookie Tour.
Ranking Systems
The current ranking system was implemented at the start of 2014. The previous system, the national head to head, existed for 5 years. The head to head system was further supplemented with two other provincial systems. One of the secondary ranking systems was to select juniors for the available provincial spots for the Canadian Nationals. While the other attempted to fix a flaw in the way top provincial juniors were protecting their head to head ranking. It was found the head to head system did not encourage enough competitive play. This new system awards points for progress in a tournament without ever penalizing a player with a poor result.
The current system is national based with points given per round win in a tournament. National events have the highest points awarded followed by provincial level tournaments. Each province will have their provincial level points determined by the province success rate at the national events. In each province, tournament levels below the Provincial Championships will receive their own lower points awardment based on the provincial level points.
In British Columbia, the tournament structure consists of the Provincial Championships, Selection Series, Competition Series and Development Series.
BC Provincial Championships will received points based on the Canadian Nationals points at a rate of 0.216 for boys and a rate of 0.207 for girls. Juniors in different age groups and will receive different percent of points based on the under 18 events. Also the boys and girls categories will collect different amount of points. For example, boys' and girls' champions in their respected under 18 national events will receive 10,000 points each. The champions in the under 16 Canadian Nationals will only receive 6000 for boys and 6800 each for girls. Further reading on http://rogersrankings.com/#/junior/.
The Selection Series are used to select juniors to represent BC at the Nationals. This series consist of three events each in both the indoor and outdoor seasons. This level represent 60% of the Provincial Championships.
The Competition Series will build juniors' skills towards participation at the above level, while the Development Series will do likewise for the Competition Series.
Juniors are able to combined age categories to accumulate points for their overall rankings. Valid provincial membership is required earning ranking points. Ranking is based on a rolling 52 week point accumulation with only their top 5 results count. International and open events will also count towards this ranking system. For example winning the Stanley Park open event will be compensated with 16700 points. Coming top in an ITF Grade 1 junior tournament will get 50,000 points while being a Grand Slam champion will be richly rewarded with 17,300,000 points (equivalent to 2000 ATP points). Rankings for doubles will be maintained separately.
Previous Ranking System (FYI Only)
Basically, there were three ranking systems in British Columbia from 2009 to 2013. The first was a head to head national ranking system which accumulates points from all your sanctioned tournament matches played in Canada since January 1st, 2009. This was not an event or age group specific and stayed with you throughout your competitive play in Canada. The points awarded was based on who your opponent was, what his/her ranking points at the time of the match and the star level. Each tournament was assigned a star system to determined the level of play.
The second ranking system was re-introduced in 2012. This system was a 12 months and 24 months based performance ranking applicable only to sanctioned tournaments in British Columbia. This was a play level and age group specific ranking. Therefore, participating in different levels and/or age groups will produce more than one ranking for each player. Points were awarded for each round progression through the draw. Points are multiplied by base points, tournament participation factor and tournament rating. Tournaments were assigned level 0.13 for a challenger division, and between a level 1 and 3 for a champs division. The purpose for this re-introduction was to assist in the selection of the provincial teams for the nationals. Doubles rankings had also been tabulated under this system.
The third ranking system was a point race to qualify for spots on the provincial teams to the Canadian Nationals. Selected tournaments were assigned this status and participants' success in each round will determine the points won under a separate points table. Points were accumulated through these selected tournaments. A smaller draw size limits the number of entries into these events. Selection into the main draws was based on the first two ranking systems.
