Coquitlam Tennis Club Junior Program 2016: Double Upsets in the U14 Singles Finals

CTC Junior Club Closed – U14 | The favourite in both the girls' and boys' under 14 singles events faltered at the last hurdle. In the boys' event, Kevin Baumann, the top seed and defending club champion brushed aside every one of his opponents in the qualifying round-robin without losing more than four games per match. In the semi-finals, he beat his doubles partner Jason Wu 8-2, while the runner-up in the round robin group, Dilraj Phull beat Steven Baumann 6-2, 6-0. The younger Baumann brother, as the winner of the under 12 qualifying round, won through to the under 14 semi-finals after beating both Jason Wu and Alex Dong in a special playoff round. In the boys' final, Kevin started off strongly to gain a 4-0 lead before his equipment malfunction. He broke two of his racquet strings in the first set and after the second time he had no choice but to use an unfamiliar racquet. His shots became unreliable and unforced errors crept in. Phull seized the opportunity and worked his way back into the match. That was all that was needed for Phull to pull an upset. Kevin younger brother beat Wu for the third place.

The doubles event saw Kevin Baumann and Jason Wu dominated all their doubles matches except for their final match. The final was contested between Baumann-Wu and Baumann-Phull. It went three sets with Baumann-Wu finally wrapped up 10-7 in the third set. Kevin Baumann won this event last year with Zach Amaral as his partner.

A similar story unfolded in the girls' qualifying round robin. Alaina Ge, a favourite to win this event, went undefeated in her round robin matches. She defeated her doubles partner, Gurminder Phull, in the semi-final. Her opponent in the final was Danica Davidovic. Davidovic barely made it to the top four main draw from her qualifying round. In her semi-final she faced the number two seed Silvana Huang whom she lost 8-5 in the qualifying. This semi-final went three sets with Davidovic closing it out 10-8 in the super-tiebreak third set. This brought her lots of confidence to her match against Ge even though she did not win a single game in their previous match. In the final, Davidovic just kept the balls back in play, which forced Ge to get impatient and over aggressive with her shots. It worked out too easy for Davidovic as Ge continued to pile unforced errors, one after another. The final was over so quickly with a 6-2, 6-0 score and Ge looked perplexed as to what had just happened.

Ge may have come in second place in the singles event but she became the club champion in the doubles event with Phull.
