2 Gold, 1 Silver, 6 Bronze, 1 Consolation Gold and 2 Consolation Silver

Coquitlam Junior Open Championships  |  It was almost a weather perfect tournament. All dry with plenty of sunshine except for a 20 minutes delay on that Tuesday afternoon. This year it was all about the younger juniors in our club's program. Eight younger juniors made the semi-finals or better. But the older juniors walked away with the golds including a consolation gold.

In the absence of club junior players such as Jedi Tetik, the Shen brothers, Daniel and Steven, and even Alexander Baumann was missing in action in the Champs events, Mark Lintott, 18, stepped up to the plate and led the way with two under 18 doubles winner's trophies. Lintott teamed up with Keenan Ishida of Richmond to capture the champs doubles title defeating Dominik Wrona and Stefan Ungurean of Coquitlam 7-6, 6-3. Baumann, 16,  returned from vacation in time to partner Lintott for his second title victory in the under 18 challenger doubles. Top seed Baumann and Lintott lived up to their seeding and they proved to be the better team and won 6-1, 7-5 over Wrona and Ungurean in the challenger doubles finals. Giselle Bonney, 17, and Vanessa Mansfield, 15, both made the consolation finals. Mansfield won the girls under 18 champs singles consolation title by defeating Anastasia Krivonogova of Surrey, 6-2, 6-2. Over to the challenger girls under 18 singles consolation draw, Bonney lost to Krivonogova 8-5 in the finals.

One of our promising under 14 years old juniors, Eddie Wu, 12, played through to a semi-finals placing and one runner-up position. He made the finals of the under 12 champs singles event by defeating the second seed Joshua Pollock in the semi-finals in three sets, 5-7, 6-4, 7-5. In the finals, the top seed Michael Chu did not have too much trouble beating Wu 6-4, 6-1. Wu and Dickson Zhuang, 13, both advanced to the under 14 challenger singles semi-finals. Wu lost again to Chu, and this time in three sets 5-7, 6-2, 6-2, and Zhuang lost to the number 5 seed Liam Huebner 6-1, 6-0.

Another club junior to reach two semi-finals was Christian Georgiev. Georgiev, 13, seeded number four in the under 16 challenger singles event, met the top seed Richard Song of Burnaby in the semi-finals and lost 6-0, 6-4. As luck would have it, Georgiev also met the number one seeded team in the semi-finals of the under 14 challenger doubles. Georgiev and his doubles partner Joshua Yang, 13, came up short against Nemanja Asprovski of Vancouver, and Liam Huebner of West Vancouver. They lost 6-3, 6-3.

The younger brother of Alexander, Steven made the semi-finals of his under 10 challenger singles event. After losing the first set 6-2 to Joseph Kingsley of Richmond in the quarter-finals, he won the next two sets 6-3 and 10-4 in the third set super-tiebreaker.

In the girls events, Tiana Andjelic, 13, reached the semi-finals of the under 14 challenger singles draw after the number four seed Ena Indjin withdrew. She faced the second seed Sasha Vagramov of Port Moody and lost 6-1, 6-3. Cate Belton, 11, lost to Rachel Tuhten of Coquitlam 6-3, 6-0 in the under 12 Challenger singles consolation finals.

Other notable quarter-final results: Anastassia Krasnova, GU18 champs singles; Mansfield, G18 challenger singles; Kevin Baumann, BU12 Challenger singles; Jenny Jia and Franzene Tsui, GU14 challenger singles. Benjamin Loewen in the BU14 Challenger singles and Ian Chok in the BU16 challenger singles, both made it to the round of 16.
