Seeds Fall

Day TwoCoquitlam Junior Spring Challenger | The top two seeds in the Boys' U16 events, both from Victoria, failed to move beyond their first matches. The No. 1 seed, Tory Tronrud suffered a three set defeat to Whistler's Joshua MacNeil. After capturing the first set 6-2, Tronrud lost the second 6-4. Both players fought hard in the third, sending it to a tie-breaker, which MacNeil won at 7-2. John Shukin, seed No. 2 here, lost to our local boy Jedi Tetik of Port Coquitlam 6-4, 6-1. Other seeded players who did make it through the main draws are No. 2 seed Jay Artley of Vancouver and No. 3 seed Garrison Comber of West Vancouver. Both are in the Boys' U12 event. Jay's older twin, Brendan, seeded No.1 managed to win one for the family. He easily defeated Max Gupta in straight sets. Whistler's Shane Black, the No. 3 seed and Coquitlam's Dominik Wrona, seeded No.4 in the Boys' U14 event didn't advance past the second round.
North Saanich's Ryan Emanuele continues his march forward in the Boys' U14 draw. After coming from behind to beat the no. 6 seed yesterday, he made his second comeback today. At first it seemed physical size does not matter as 13 year old Alexander Baumann, who trains at CTC, broke Emanuele's serve early in the first set to move to a 5-2 lead. Just as he was poised to take the first set, Emanuele comeback began. Emanuele changed tactics and slowed the rallies down. When the opportunities presented itself, he made winners with his powerful forehand. Baumann saw his lead evaporated when his opponent tied the set at 5-5, and went on to win 2 more games and take the first set. The second set quickly slipped away from Baumann and he lost the match 7-5, 6-2. After the match Baumann was clearly disappointed and blamed his loss of focus on the adverse result. Stay tune for more action on day 3.
