Our Appreciation Alexander!

Junior Club Awards 2013 |  It was once again no surprise that Alexander Baumann walked away with his fifth Best Junior Player of the Year Award. A record equaling Nadia Wilkinson five Best Girl Player of the Year Awards from 1991 to 1995. The last time she received this award in 1995, it was probably within a month before Baumann was born. Baumann has just turned 18 years old two weeks ago. Back then, this best junior award was split between boys and girls. So in that sense, Baumann's record may just pip ahead of Wilkinson record. After his disappointing showing in the Duncan road trip, where he lost in the semi-finals of his singles and doubles events, he chalked up 15 straight singles match wins, and overall 24 out of 26 matches played. His 15 straight singles wins included 3 titles in 3 weeks. He could have easily added a fourth title to his successful run, the club under 18 singles. But the final was delayed due to his unavailability and then his serious foot injury. In fact this final was played indoor just the day before this Awards & Banquet event. Baumann lost to Steven Shen in three sets 1-6, 6-2, 6-4.

The accolade did not end there. Alexander Baumann has been our junior program best junior for the past five years. Now that he has turned 18 years old, this will be his last year participating in the junior program as a junior player. His enthusiasm in competing in tennis tournaments coupled with his dedication and hard work show his commitment to his sport. This boy is an athlete first. He is also very competitive in two other sports: basketball and soccer. His tennis successes have contributed so much to the overall success of our junior program. It is only fitting the club bestows the Special Achievement Award to him. This award has been presented twice before. Both times to Rahim Esmail who received it in 1993 and 1994.

The Most Improved Junior Player of the Year goes to 17 years old Anastassia Krasnova. She did an excellent work in reaching three finals and winning one of them during the season. Another departing junior from the junior ranks is Giselle Bonney. She received her second Sportsmanship Award. She received her first in 2011. Alexander's younger brother Kevin joined this elite group when he picked up his Best Effort Award during the ceremony. Only thirteen years old, Kevin is also this year's under 14 club singles champion. Three years ago Kevin Baumann was the under 10 club singles champion.
