2015 Coquitlam Open – Junior Divisions | Last August the Coquitlam Junior Open tournament became an expanded Coquitlam Open tournament when it was held simultaneously with the adult events. It also welcomed two new divisions into its fold: the Future Stars and the Rookie Tour.
The Future Stars Tour is a more competitive tournament, whereas the Rookie Tour is as the title suggests it is a more introductory level into the competitive world of tennis. As far as the results went for these two divisions, our kids tennis program enjoyed a wondrous success reaching the finals of all four events offered. Winning success came in the U8 and the U10 events of the Future Stars Tour.
Eight years old Simon Lin won the U8 singles event beating West Vancouver's and Hollyburn Country Club member Ewan John Robertson 6-2 in the final. Lin came through his qualifying round without a loss. Arnav Bhattacharya achieved a third placing when he defeated Jeevyn Sing Rattan 6-2. Sean Lee won the U10 singles event by topping Uku Feldman of Vancouver 6-3 in the finals. Aaron Xie lost to Feldman, who trains at the UBC Tennis Club, in his first match but made it through the consolation rounds to beat Aaron Ye 5-3 in his last match. Lin and Lee achieved their first open tournament victory with their respective titles.
In the Rookie Tour division, eight years old Philip Alexandru came in second best after he lost out to Nicholas Kwan of Vancouver in the U10 event finals. Alexandru lost 4-5. Evan Chen claimed third placing in the same event. In the U12 singles event, 11 years old Michael Mo came up a bit short in the finals after being victorious in his three previous matches. Vancouver's Ishaan Modi beat him 6-5. Alexis Nguyen won the consolation finals beating club mate Nicole Baumann 6-3.
Over to the competition series division, Alexandra Mandewo reached the semi-finals of the Girls U12 singles event. After two impressive 6-0, 6-0 dribbling of her opponents in the early round, she had to fight hard in her semi-finals, but was edged out in a tight 7-6, 3-6, 7-6 score to Brianne Jim of Vancouver. Alaina Ge, seeded number 2, lost to Maryjoe Crisologo 6-1, 6-0 in her U16 singles semi-finals. The number two seeded team of Danica Davidovic and Inaya Halaba lost to the top seed Ella Nielsen and Stefanie Silva in the Girls U14 doubles finals.
Aaron Xie second entry was in the U10 singles category in this division. He lost in the first round to Roan Priatel in three sets 6-3, 4-6, 10-8, but he went on to beat two other opponents to make the consolation finals. He came up short when Jack Division beat him 6-0, 6-2. Davidson is from West Vancouver's Hollyburn Country Club. Dauntae Turnquest also reach the consolation finals and she won it 8-4 over Clair Wang. Zach Amaral also had a very close first round match. Pitting his game against Paul Bao he lost his first match in the third set in a 10-8 decision. He set up the consolation finals against Gregory Dee after going through three earlier matches in an easy fashion. Amaral lost 6-4, 6-4 to Dee.
Other notable result in this division: Aleksandar Davidovic, or Sasa as he would like to be called, won both this singles matches in the Boys U12 singles event to set up an encounter with the top seed Denny Bao. Davidovic lost 6-2, 6-3 in the quarter-finals. Kasra Karimi made past the first round of the Boys U16 singles event, but could not move past the third seed Andrew Huang. Both Jean Paul Pamarang and Riley Friend won their first round matches in the Boys U18 singles event but failed to move through their seeded opponent in the next round. Pamarang lost to Martin Lorayes the third seed. Friend went down to the fourth seed David Zoric 7-6, 6-4. In the Boys U18 doubles, Friend and Pamarang partnered up and won their first round match easily but lost out to Gregory Dee and Tylo Roberts in a tight 6-4, 3-6, 10-5 quarter-final matchup.
Our juniors had more success in the developmental series division. After reaching the semi-finals in the previous week, Alexandra Mandewo made the Girls U14 singles finals and won it with an impressive 6-0, 6-0 score over the top seed Lilian He.
Sasa also won two matches in the Boys U14 singles event only to lose to the number 3 seed Lawrence Ivanov in the quarter-finals. After winning the first set 6-3, Davidovic lost the second set tie-breaker and then the third set 6-1. He fared much better in his doubles event. Seeded number one, with his doubles partner Markus Marosits, they won the finals beating the second seeded team of Atsa Cridge and Etienne Talasi 6-1, 6-1.
Sasa's older sister Danica Davidovic made the semi-finals of the Girls U16 singles, but was defeated easily by the top seed Sara Zupanc. The top seed from Richmond then went on to beat Inaya Halaba 6-1, 6-1 in the finals. Halaba was seeded number 2 in the event. Keiko Pan reached the Girls U18 singles finals after she defeated Jimi Lee and her club mate and the top seed Alaina Ge in her previous rounds. Pan lost to unseeded Lucia Kristof in the finals.
Riley Friend battled through four matches before meeting the top seed Solal Batiste Pont in the finals of the Boys U18 singles. Pont was born in France but moved to New Zealand to live for a few years before coming to Canada in the latter part of 2014. He proved to be the better player by defeating Friend 6-1, 6-1. Friend also achieved a second finals in the Boys U18 doubles event with his partner Pamarang. As an unseeded team they defeated the top seeded team of Mark and Lawrence Ivanov before extending the second seeded team of Andrew Huang and Raymond Lee to three sets in the finals. Friend and Pamarang lost 6-2, 2-6, 6-3.
Dauntae Turnquest won her second consolation finals when she beat Cheryl Gu 6-2, 6-2 in the Girls U16 singles event. After failing to get past Edward Sun in three sets, 4-6, 6-4, 10-8, Steven Baumann beat three opponents in the consolations rounds before being stopped in the finals by the second seed Denny Bao. Bao trains at the Vancouver Lawn and Tennis Club. Baumann lost 6-2, 7-6. Sidney Lin also made the consolation finals in the Girls U18 singles but Jimi Lee beat her 6-4, 6-3.
Other notable results: Zach Amaral, Matthew Wong, Kevin Baumann and Pamarang all won their first round matches in the Boys U18 singles events, but could not keep the winning momentum going in the round of 16.
