2 Gold, 3 Silver, 3 Bronze + 3 Consolation Gold & 5 Silver Placings

Duncan Road Trip  |  With a group of 19 juniors, the highest number in many years, we came back with eight main draws semi-finals or better, and eight consolation finals results at the 25th Annual 'Biondo' Junior Grass Court Championships tournament. At the South Cowichan Lawn Tennis Club, there were a few disappointments, mainly in the older juniors performances. Top seeded Alexander Baumann did not fare well in both his events. He was eliminated by the fifth seed John Paul Yun in the semi-finals of his under 18 singles event. Yun beat him 3-6, 6-1, 7-6. Baumann also lost in the semi-finals of his doubles event. Seeded number two with his partner Steven Shen, they both went out against Yun and Christopher Chan 7-5, 6-3. Their consolation win came when they beat Riley Friend and Matthew Wong 6-1, 6-1 in the final. Incidentally, Shen also lost to Yun in his first round singles match 6-3, 6-2. Seeded at number three, he redeemed himself in the consolation event by winning the final match against Juan Barrero 6-0, 6-0.

Over on the girls under 18 singles event, top seeded Giselle Bonney lost in her first round match against Anna Dobashi Reutin 6-3, 6-0. She made a turn around by winning the consolation event, beating Lucy Ewart 7-6, 6-4 in the final. Bonney first round lost open up her side of the draw for club mate Anastassia Krasnova to move through to the finals. Seeded number four, Krasnova beat Reutin 6-3, 6-4 in the semi-final but lost out to Mateya Radisavljevi 6-2, 6-1 in the final. Radisavljevi was seeded number three. Bonney and Krasnova partner up for the under 18 doubles event and was seeded number one. Unfortunately they did not live up to their seeding and lost to Sybella Garvin and Mina Ivaz in their first match.

On the bright side, the younger juniors did make an impact. Franzene Tsui won her under 12 singles event as the number one seeded player. She beat the second seed Mady Star 6-3, 6-4. Alexandra Mandewo made the semi-finals with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Helena Radisavljevic. She was stopped by Tsui in the semi-finals. Dilraj Singh Phull managed to reach the consolation final of the boys under 12 singles event, but lost to Miguel Pereira 7-6, 6-3.

Jared Maclean lived up to his number one seeding in his under 14 singles event. He beat the number six seed Jacob Pallai 5-7, 7-5, 6-0 in the final. He had tough semi-final match against Dickson Zhuang. Maclean managed to take the third set tie-breaker over the third seeded Zhuang. Kevin Baumann reached the quarter-final with a well earned 7-5, 6-3 win over the fifth seed Tony Liu. He came up short against the third seeded Zhuang. Seeded as the top team in the boys under 14 doubles event, Maclean and Andres Barrero lost to the second seeded team of Gregory Dee and Dickson Zhuang 6-3, 7-6 in the final.

Jenny Jia and Tsui both lost to the number one seed Alexandra Nielsen. Jia lost 6-2, 6-3 in her first round match. Tsui also lost 6-1, 6-1 in her first match after receiving a walkover in her previous round. Both met in the consolation round and Tsui was the winner with a 6-4, 6-2 score. In the consolation final, Tsui lost to Sybella Garvin. Jia and Tsui partnered up for a more successful result. They beat Star and Chanelle Moisson 7-6, 3-6, 7-6 in the semi-final to set up a meeting with the top seeded team of Alexandra and Jayden Nielsen. The number one seeded team proved too strong in the final and Jia and Tsui went down 6-2, 6-2.

In the boys under 16 singles event, it was Yun once more to spoil the success of our team. Seeded number four, Yun beat the top seeded Maclean 6-3, 6-2 in the semi-final.

Other notable results: Jason Wu beat Atom Dobashi Fjeldsted in his first round under 14 singles match. He lost to Maclean in his next match. Friend, seeded eight in the boys under 16 singles, beat Carson Hopkins 7-5, 6-7, 7-6 in his first match, but lost to Maclean as well in his next match.
