1 Gold, 2 Silver, 1 Bronze + 1 Consolation Gold
Whistler Fall Champs Classic | This is the last of the backlog of postings from the past two months that did not get posted due to a lack of time. Since this happened over the labour day long weekend, it is difficult to remember the details of this trip.
The weather cooperated during this three days trip to the resort village of Whistler. The temperature was a little on the cool side on the first morning. As the day went on it turned out to be nice and comfortable. The next couple of days were warmer.
Our small team of four boys competed in the under 18 singles and doubles events. Seeded number one and two were Steven Shen and Alexander Baumann respectively. Both were expected to meet up in the finals, but Shen was defeated by Alexander's older brother William in the quarter-final in three sets 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. In the first semi-finals, Alexander easily won his match against club mate Ryan Sandrin. In the second semi-finals, William Baumann lost his chance to meet his younger brother for the last time in a junior tennis singles match. He lost 6-2, 6-1 to Adrian Wimmer, a Brit on vacation in Whistler. In the finals, Alexander missed his chances to take an early lead in the first set. Instead, Wimmer stepped it up and took the first set 6-3. He kept the momentum going and raced through the second set to take a 4-0 lead. Alexander fought back to level the set at 4-4, only to give up the next two games and the title match. Shen won the consolation singles event by defeating three opponents. He beat Bryan Pranjic 6-3, 6-1; Alexander Saayman 6-1, 6-4; and Jonas Pahl 6-0, 6-3.
BIG BROTHER vs LITTLE BROTHER: The Final Chapter
Alexander had better luck in the doubles round-robin event. All four boys managed to win their respective early round-robin matches. Their final match to be played became the event finals. The doubles teams pairing were Alexander and Steven, and William and Ryan. So for the last time in junior tennis, this set up between William and his younger brother became the fourth official match between the two. The result could have even the scores between the two brothers, but Alexander took a 3-1 edge over William by winning this doubles match 8-5 with his doubles partner.
