Wong Wins Big!

CTC Junior Club Closed – U14  |  Once thirteen years old Matthew Wong got to round two in the main draw, he knew if he played two good matches, the under 14 club title would be his. And that was what he did. His semi-finals match against another very promising young player, Jayden Nielsen, was decided at 10-6 in the third set super-tiebreaker. The first two sets in that match were evenly split. In the finals he faced Kevin Baumann who had beaten him in the round-robin stage in three sets.

The second semi-finals went three sets as well. 11 years old Baumann had to battle past 13 years old Benjamin Loewen for a place in the finals. He won the match 10-7 in the third set super-tiebreaker. Baumann won the under 12 club title last year and was looking to add one more title to his collection.

In this finals, both boys fought tooth and nail against each other. Throughout the match, Wong used his powerful forehand to move his opponent around the baseline, much to his advantage. But Baumann was not totally ineffective at the baseline. He made his offensive attack as well, targeting his opponent's weaker backhand whenever he got the chance. In the end, Wong prevailed in a tough straight sets 6-4, 7-5 title victory.

In the consolation draw, 12 years old Jenny Jia faced a much taller and stronger opponent in the finals. Soon to be 14 years old, Kai Rados held his game together and cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 win.
