3 Gold, 2 Silver, 3 Bronzes + 2 Consolation Gold & 1 Silver Placings

2015 Duncan Road Trip  |  As we set forth on our annual trip to Vancouver Island to compete on the grass courts of the South Cowichan Lawn Tennis Club, we brought along 21 of our juniors from our High Performance groups. This is our largest contingent in the past eight years and it proved to be more successful than the one made 12 months ago. Our team was rewarded with 3 titles, 2 finalist positions, and 3 semi-final appearances, plus 2 consolation wins and 1 consolation runner-up placement. This resulted in a huge change from 2014 when we returned home without any appearances in the finals of the main draw . This was understandably due to our rebuilding effort.

Let's get a run down of the results. The boy who brought home two winning trophies is Dilraj Phull. Only 13 years of age, he won both the boys under 14 singles and doubles events. The last time someone from our club did this double titles in this age group was none other than Alexander Baumann who had achieved this feat in 2009. Seeded number 5 in his singles draw, he beat three opponents before getting to the finals. In the finals, he lost the first set at love in a very quick manner, but managed to pulled himself up to take the second set in a tie-breaker. With a super-tiebreak third set, he battled with his number 3 seed opponent and eventually took the title by narrowly defeating Reid Picken 10-8.

For his doubles event, he and partner Jackson Carl Boone were the top seeded team. They easily won the title in the finals with a 6-1, 6-3 score over Thomas Lyle-Hartloper and Reid Picken.

Likewise, Inaya Halaba also reached two finals. She won the under 14 doubles titles with Danica Davidovic with ease. They were both seeded number one and had little trouble disposing of their opponents along the way to their title victory. In her under 12 singles event, Halaba was seeded second and made her way to the finals to face the top seeded player Elizabether Prilepin. Her opponent proved to be a stronger player and Halaba conceded the finals in a 6-1, 6-1 score.

For Riley Friend competing in the boys under 18 singles event, he put up a brave fight all the way until he met the top seed Anmoson Pan in the semi-finals. In his first round match, he faced the number three seeded player Tony Liu and won the match in a tight 7-5, 6-7, 10-7 scoreline. His next opponent was Gregory Dee whom he battled to a 7-6, 7-5 victory. Facing Pan, Friend took the first set 6-4 but couldn't stay on course and lost the next two sets, 6-0 and 10-1. Friend did a step better in his under 18 doubles event. He and Jean Paul Pamarang, an unseeded team in the draw, put up a hard fought contest against the top seeded team of John Dempsey and Ryan Picken in the finals before losing in a 6-4, 7-5 decision.

Danica Davidovic and Keiko Pan reached their respective semi-finals. Davidovic lost to top seed Prilepin 6-1, 6-0 and Pan lost her match to Victoria Macfarlane, the second seed, 6-1, 6-0.

Other notable results in the main draws. Alexandra Mandewo won her under 12 first round singles match against Nicole Stein 6-4, 6-2 but lost out to club mate Halaba in her next match. Steven Baumann defeated Laim Velonic 6-0, 6-4 in his first match but conceded the second round match to the number four seed Jackson Carl Boone in his under 14 singles event. His older brother Kevin Baumann beat club mate Gary Ren 6-4, 2-6, 11-9 in his under 16 singles first round match, but he wasn't successful in getting through his next match against the fourth seed Ryan Picken. Over in the boys under 18 singles event, Matthew Wong won his first round match against Hong Huang 6-2, 7-5, but had to face the top seed in his next round. Wong lost to Anmoson Pan.

In the consolation draws, Steven Baumann and Aleksander Davidovic collected their consolation win in the finals when they defeated the second seeded team 8-4. Their opponents were Matthew Chan and Alexander Priatel. Our team collected our second consolation win when Zach Amaral and Kevin Baumann defeated Kasra Karimi and Matthew Wong 8-2. Both Karimi and Wong are club mates.
