1 Gold, 2 Silver, 7 Bronze + 2 Consolation Gold Placings

Coquitlam Junior Open Championships  |  I was afraid I would have not survived running this tournament this year. Days leading up to the Friday start of the week long tournament, I was trying to squeeze in time to make the men's team practices and working on and scheduling the draws for this tournament. When this tournament started at 5 pm on Friday, I was already off on a road trip to Kelowna for the Miele Men's Team Provincial, leaving Terry Lowe and Kiyo Breiting to handle the tournament until my return on late Sunday afternoon or early evening. While in Kelowna and in between those team ties, I was working on the Sunday's schedule as well on my laptop and also working on the Challenger draws and scheduling them. As it turned out this trip was worth it. The end result was a successful one. The team was crowned the Provincial Champions after finishing undefeated in the team ties. After the long drive back on the Sunday, I was back to take the helm of things in the club house by early evening. It was exhausting to say the least!

Our junior program members results were better in the development division this time around than in the spring tournament. Even with a few notable club juniors missing from the entry list, we were rewarded with a win in the Girls' under 14 singles event. Alaina Ge upgraded her consolation win from the spring event to win her first ever title in the main draw with a straight set win over Vancouver's Jennifer Fan. Danica Davidovic lost out on a place in the final when she lost to Ge in three tough sets, 6-2, 2-6, 7-5. Playing in her first ever tournament Gurminder Phull lost to the second seed Isabella Asenov 6-2, 7-5 in her first match. Phull then went on to win the consolation final over Neer Brimbrahw. Both Ge and Phull finished third in the under 14 doubles event. Adelina Morkina also went on to win her consolation final after loosing her first ever match to Fiona Scott in the under 12 singles main draw. In the boys' under 12 singles event, Steven Baumann was stopped in the semi-finals when he lost to the second seeded player Amu Hata of Vancouver 7-5, 6-3. In the quarter-finals, Baumann triumphed over the third seed Tobin Youssef Priatel 6-2, 6-1.

The juniors in the older age groups did very well. Starting off in the under 16 events, both Riley Friend and Tiana Andjelic had a successful run to reach their respective singles finals. Friend had beaten Chase Mccrum, the third seed, in the quarter-finals and Jack Lindsay in the semi-finals. Lindsay had beaten the number two seed in three sets in his previous match. In the final, Friend lost to Vancouver's Andrew Huang 6-1, 6-3. It took Huang three sets to beat the top seed Tyler Radloff in the semi-finals. In the girls event, second seed Andjelic beat Leena Bennetto, the fourth seed, 6-2, 6-3 to move to the final. In the second semi-final, third seed Ena Indjin of Richmond defeated the top seed Hana Cho 6-0, 6-4. Indjin went on to win the final when she beat Andjelic 6-2, 6-3.

Friend and his doubles partner Jean Paul Pamarang made it to the boys under 18 doubles semi-finals before losing to top seed Martin Lorayes and Alexander Twardowski, the eventual champions. Zach Amaral was paired up with Tyler Radloff of North Vancouver for his entry into the doubles event. Amaral also made the semi-finals with his doubles partner but they were defeated in three tough sets by Kodie Harkins and Aayush Raj Malhotra. The score was 6-3, 4-6, 6-2. Steven Shen reached the U18 singles semi-finals before losing to top seed Lorayes 6-4, 6-2.

Here are the other juniors who had won at least a match in their event. Carlos Rengifo won his first ever match beating Jason Nybo 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 before losing to the number four seed Lucas Berretta 6-0, 6-1 in his under 12 singles event. Alex Dong also made it past his first match in the under 14 singles before losing to the fifth seed Markus Marosits 6-3, 6-3. Aleksandar Davidovic won a couple of consolation matches before losing to Ethan Churhill 6-1, 6-2.
