3 Gold, 4 Silver & 6 Bronze Placings

Coquitlam Junior Open Championships  |  It was all about the weather. There were interruptions, delays, postponements, and even the cancellation of the Challenger consolation events. Last year's tournament weather was near perfect. What a contrast this year's tournament turned out to be. At least we managed to wrap it all up by early Friday evening.

In terms of performances from our club juniors in this year's Junior Open main draws, we have bounced back from a dip we had last year. We managed to have 13 semi-finals or better finishes. Last year we had only 9. The previous high was 14 in 2011 but without any wins. This year we are golden in 3 events, tying the 3 wins we had in 2008.

The golden wins came from the older juniors. Alexander Baumann, 17, turned up a very good performance in his U18 champs singles event. He beat Vancouver's William Tsai in the final with a three sets score of 6-1, 4-6, 6-3. Baumann also battled through his semi-final match against Shubham Soni of Langley. He persevered in the end with a 7-5, 1-6, 6-2 scoreline. The U18 Champs doubles event did not get run due to insufficient entries. With Baumann's regular doubles partner, Steven Shen, not available for play, he partnered up with Dominik Wrona, 16, to win the U18 Challenger doubles events. This doubles team defeated the third seeded team of Anmoson Pan and Dickson Zhuang 8-2 to claim the title.

The other golden win came from 17 years old Anastassia Krasnova. She surprised all of us by beating 16 year old club mate Winnie Zhuang in the U18 Challenger singles final to win her first tournament. She won with a score of 8-5.

The two of the four finalists came from Winnie Zhuang. She lost in both the U16 and the U18 girls Challenger single finals. On top on her lost to Krasnova, she also came up short in the girls U16 singles final, losing 6-2, 6-2 to the top seed Alexandra Prilepin.

In the girls U14 Challenger singles final, second seed Tiana Andjelic, 13, was tied at 5-5 in the first set before retiring from her match. She had taken ill and was forced to concede her match to top seed Sara Bremsak of North Vancouver. Alexandra Mandewo, 9, joined the finalist appearances with her runner-up finish against West Vancouver's Elizabeth Paula Prilepin. She lost 6-0, 6-1.

There were six other juniors making the semi-finals in their events. Mandewo and Silvana Huang, 11, both had quarter-finals wins in the girls U12 Challenger singles. Mandewo beat Daniela Padres of West Vancouver 8-2, and Huang defeated Surrey's Neer Brimbrahw 8-5. Over on the U12 Champs singles side, Franzene Tsui, 12 battled past Vancouver's Viktoria Abanos 7-5, 7-5 to make her semi-final appearance.

Kevin Baumann, 13, and Zach Amaral, 13, beat out Issac Dee and Luka Mladenovic 8-4 and the fourth seed Jordan and Julien Curlier 8-6 to meet Keita Duclos and Mark Ivanov in the semi-finals. They lost 8-5 in the boys U14 Challenger doubles semi-finals. Sam Yan, 15, came back from first set down to beat Vaibhav Soni 2-6, 7-5, 6-1 in the boys U16 Champs singles quarter-finals. He couldn't get any traction in the semi-finals against the second seed, Coquitlam's Stefan Ungurean, and lost 6-0, 6-1.

The sixth semi-finalist is Andjelic. She lost out to the top seed Alexandra Prilepin 8-5 in the girls U16 Challenger singles event.

Other notable results: Kevin Baumann won two rounds before being stopped in the quarter-finals of the boys U14 Challenger singles event. He beat Luka Mladenovic 6-7, 6-1, 6-3 and Jack Lindsay 8-7 before being beaten by the fourth seed, West Vancouver's Lachlan Robertson, 8-4. Jason Wu, 13, and his doubles partner, David Tan won their first round U14 Challenger doubles match against Jas Sahota and Aaron Varat Ungpraset 8-2. They lost to the third seeded team of Conor Robertson and Lachlan Robertson in their quarter-final match 8-0. Benjamin Loewen won his first round match 6-3, 6-3 against Rahim Mitha of North Vancouver in his boys U16 Challenger singles event. The seventh seeded player, David Li, beat him 8-0 in the next round. Yan was also through his first round U18 Challenger singles match. He beat Grant Mathias 8-3 before losing 8-6 to the second seed Dylan Wang of Richmond.
