2 Silvers, 3 Bronzes + 3 Consolation Golds & 2 Silvers Placings

Coquitlam Junior Spring Challenger  |  As expected, it rained and rained. We had encountered wet weather during this tournament for the past six years. This year's rain out was manageable as it fell during the first part of the tournament period. The tournament was scheduled to start on Friday afternoon at five o'clock, but it rained right from the get go. No matches were played until Saturday afternoon at half past five when the weather turned dry and all was good from then on. With some adjustment to the match format, all matches were completed by three o'clock on Monday afternoon.

Many of the participants came from far and wide. There were representations from Victoria to Sechelt, from Kamloops to Kelowna to Penticton, from Whitehorse, from Mission to Abbotsford, and from the many cities around the Lower Mainland.

With a few of our top juniors playing in the Hollyburn Junior Classic tournament, the rest of the juniors managed to turned in a good performance at home. Twenty juniors represented our club in all singles events held except the girls' under 10 category.

Aleksandra Davidovic led the way in the main draw of the boys' under 10 event. He beat Daniel Tolsky 6-3, 6-2 to reach the semi-final. Armandt Hediger, 8, had to retire in the first set due to pain in his right wrist. He was disappointed having to retire his match. A day later, and with a taped up wrist, he beat club mate Alejandro Granados 8-7 (14-12) to reach the consolation finals. He lost to Luka Zoric in straight sets.

In the boys' under 14 event, Jason Wu, 12, won his first round match with a decisive 6-1, 6-0 victory over Andy Kim, but was stopped by the third seed, Tylo Roberts in his next match. Kevin Baumann was not fortunate enough in the main draw, he faltered to Victoria's Andrew Partyka in his first round match. He pulled his game together to win the consolation event. He beat Brad Hemmerich 6-3, 6-2 in the finals. He also defeated Alex Roberts and Brandon Nam Luu en route to the finals.

Over to the girls' under 14 event, Tiana Andjelic was seeded number two. She beat Celine Tsai and club mate Danica Davidovic to make the finals, but lost to the number one seed, Lauren Macfarlene 6-2, 7-5. Davidovic battled a tough first round match and eventually won in three sets over Jaewon Yoon 7-6 (7-3), 3-6, 6-2. In the consolation event, Jenny Jia beat club mate Silvana Huang in the semi-finals and won the finals with a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Tsai.

The boys' under 16 singles event was the largest draw in this tournament. Our front runner Riley Friend, 14, had successes in his first two matches. Friend beat Duffy Holeksa, 6-0, 6-4 and Jean Choi, 6-2, 6-3 to set up a quarter-final encounter with the number two seeded player, Nikola Surjanovic. The first set was close as Friend fought hard to stay in the match. After losing the tie-breaker, the wind seemed to have left him as well. He gave up the second set 6-1. Sam Yan won through his consolation draw section to set up the final match against Sean Hayre, only to stumble to a 2-6, 1-6 decision.

Our club junior girls were well represented in the girls' under 18 event. Anastassia Krasnova, two weeks short of her 17th birthday, made a surprised appearance in the final of this event. She defeated her club mate and number two seed Giselle Bonney 7-6, 6-2 in the semi-finals. Krasnova lost the finals to the number one seed Stella Song. Winnie Zhuang lost her first round three sets match to Sierra Roberts. She eventually found her game and went on to win the consolation event beating Aline Halliday of Whitehorse in the finals.

Quite a number of club juniors were happy to participate in their first ever tournament. These juniors are Kaivaan Sina Teimouri, Danica Davidovic, Silvana Huang, David Luo, James Huang, Armandt Hediger and Alejandro Granados.

With the last set of trophies handed out at the end of Monday afternoon, most of the out of town juniors were on their home, by car, by ferry, and by plane.
