3 Golds, 4 Silvers + 1 Bronze

Whistler Fall Champs Classic  |  Who would have thought the weather was going to be so gorgeous on the Labour Day long weekend. It felt like the middle of summer rather than the beginning of the end of summer. Eight juniors made the trip to Whistler in the early morning hours of Saturday. The awesome weather made it a very pleasant drive up the sea to sky highway to our rented condo in the village. The main thing about these rental condos is that it big enough to pull together a small group, allows for group interactions, provide adequate necessities of a home and a bit of freedom from their parents versus limited options in a motel/hotel room.

Our older junior boys competed in the under 18 events. Even though Steven Shen was still eligible for the under 16 events, he chose to play in the highest junior age group. Alexander Baumann led the way with 4 wins in the singles event. Shen followed with 3 wins, losing to Baumann for the gold medal. Mark Lintott finished off his best year with 2 wins. Baumann and Shen teamed up for the doubles gold medal.

The girls were represented by Giselle Bonney, Vanessa Mansfield and Anastassia Krasnova. Bonney defeated Mansfield in a close match to claim silver in the under 18 girls singles event with 2 wins. She lost out on the gold to Fiona Majendie. Krasnova and partnered up team mate Majendie battled Bonney and Mansfield to win the gold medals.

Dickson Zhuang who arrived in Whistler with his parents and sister Winnie, earned a semi-finals showing with a 10-8 third set score in the under 14 boys singles event. He failed to move further in the main draw when he lost to the top seed Ryan Picken. Zhuang picked up a silver medal in the doubles event. He and Andy Sun defeated the top seeded pairing of Julian Sparkes and Andrew Partyka in the semi-finals. They eventually lost in the finals to the second seeded team of Ryan Hucul and Ryan Picken.

Kevin Baumann, the younger brother of Alexander, failed to move beyond the first round of his under 12 singles event. All was not lost for him as he was fortunate enough to gain a silver medal in the doubles event with team mate Leon Kim.

Everyone was satisfied with the results even though this was a smaller tournament. These juniors benefitted from the competition, performed well and they enjoyed the trip which is always a plus.
