Georgiev & Jia Swept Aside All Challengers

CTC Junior Club Closed – U14  |  With the competition in this age group at a good level, it was no surprise who had emerged the winner from the summer long run of matches. In the boys' event, it was unfortunate that the number one seed fell to injury and retired in the semi-finals. Eddie Wu, who is only 12 years old and is the highest ranked under 14 boy, had been playing really well in the open tournaments during the outdoor season and was the favourite to win his event. The top three boys were all ready to battle it out for supremacy at CTC.

With Dickson Zhuang through to the boys' final at the expense of Wu's injury, the second seed Christian Georgiev also booked his spot in the finals by defeating Matthew Wong in a score of 6-0, 6-3. Earlier Wong had disposed the fifth seed Joshua Yang in a 10-8 third set super-tiebreaker. Zhuang is clearly the most improved junior among the boys in the under 14 category all season long. Going into the final, it looked as if Zhuang's brewing confidence may have the final say in the contest. But for Georgiev, and with Wu out of the picture, it was his best chance to wrap things up by staying focus on his game. And he did. He played a steady baseline game to down Zhuang in straight sets 6-2, 6-3 and take up his position as club champion.

In the girls category, both finalists Jenny Jia and Tiana Andejic lost only once in the round robin section. Andejic to Jia in a 3-6, 2-6 score, and Jia to Franzene Tsui in a 8-10 third set decision. Having to face Andejic for the second time in the final match, Jia knew it would be a difficult match to go through even though the earlier match score between them would suggest otherwise. The final turned out to be a tough match for these two girls. After evenly split the first two sets with a score of 6-3, both girls fought tooth and nail in the super-tiebreaker third set. No doubt both players wanted to win badly as they battled right through to the end. Jia emerged victorious in a 6-3, 3-6, 10-8 scoreline.

Over to the boys doubles event, Wu, who had recovered from his injury, had chosen Zhuang to be his doubles partner. They showcased their effective teamwork which ended all hopes for the other teams. This team won all their matches for a decisive victory in the event and earned themselves a club championship title.
