From One Best Junior Award Recipient to Another

Junior Club Award 2012  |  It was no surprise who walked away with the biggest prize of the evening! After the last couple of years of very close contests, Alexander Baumann was in a league of his own this year. Winners in 8 events, 5 singles and 3 doubles, and his tournament highlights also included 2 singles finalists, 3 semi-finals appearances, and he qualified for the men's open main draw at the Stanley Park Open tournament. His 33-8 singles match record consisted of a 12 singles match winning streak in early July, and another 12 singles match winning streak from mid July to mid-September.

Baumann played superbly well in the early summer before he took one month break in August. Among his match highlights included wins over much higher ranked players such as Rene Kozak and Daniel Budd. After losing to his club mate Jedi Tetik in the finals of the tournament in Whistler in mid September, Baumann turned the heat on Tetik to take the coveted under 18 singles crown only days later from the defending club champion. This is his first under 18 club title. He came up short twice before and was third once.

Turned 17 only a day before, Alexander Baumann has already logged himself into the history book a few times over. By winning this Best Junior Player of the Year award for the fourth time, he surpassed Arif Mulji's second place record of three wins. Mulji won the Best Boy Player of the Year award from 1992 to 1994. Coincidentally it was Mulji who presented Baumann with this award during the evening presentation, and it came 20 years to the first time Mulji picked up this award. Those days it was split between junior boy and junior girl. The reigning record holder is Nadia Wilkinson, a winner of 5 Best Girl Player of the Year award.

Baumann also received nominations in the other three categories. But he came up short against a pair of siblings and a graduating junior. The Most Improved Junior Player of the Year award went to Dickson Zhuang. Only 13 years old, Zhuang showed much improvement during his short time in the junior program. His older sister, Winnie, 15, also bagged an award for herself and it was for Sportsmanship. Mark Lintott, 18, did enough this year to leave his mark in the junior ranks. Not only did he played the best match of his junior career on the grass courts in Cowichan, he also captured two doubles champion's trophies late in the summer. His effort did not go unnoticed, and his accomplishment was rewarded big time with the Best Effort award and he is now part of the club's history.
