2 Silver, 5 Bronze + 2 Consolation Gold and 2 Consolation Silver

Coquitlam Junior Open Championships – Challenger  |  Lots of silver and bronze for our team in the Challenger division of the Championships. The weather was not perfect. A three hours rain delay on Wednesday morning meant the last few matches were finally completed after 5:30 pm on the final day of the tournament.

Jayden Nielsen, 11, received her second finalist trophy in as many days. Seeded No. 1 in the girls under 14 singles event, Nielsen fell to the No. 2 seed, Keyu Chen in the finals. Nielsen had beaten Chen 6-4, 7-6 only days earlier in the quarter-finals of the under 12 champs singles event. This time Chen triumphed easily with a 6-1, 6-1 score.

Ryan Sandrin, 16 and William Baumann, 17, partnered up for the first time as a doubles team. In the semi-finals of the boys under 18 doubles event, they claimed victory over the second seeded team of Ken Zhang and Christopher Chan, winning in three sets, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3. In the finals, it was a close match against the top seeded team of Simon Danyluk of Burnaby and Dominik Wrona of Coquitlam. In the end, the score of 7-6, 6-4 favoured the No. 1 team.

Vanessa Mansfield, 15, and Alexandra Nielsen, 8, both made their semi-final appearances in their respective events. After beating Sarah Kavanagh of Surrey in the quarter-finals of the girls under 16 singles, Mansfield lost her next match to Alli Valk 6-1, 6-1, the No. 1 seed from North Vancouver. The younger Nielsen, a week short of the 9th birthday, fought hard for her quarter-final victory in the girls under 12 singles. She triumphed over Georgia Tuhten in a tough 5-7, 7-5, 6-2 win. She faced Sara Bremsak of North Vancouver in the semi-finals and lost 6-3, 6-3.

A bit of a disappointment for top seed Steven Shen and second seed Alexander Baumann in the boys under 18 singles event. Both club juniors were expected to meet in the finals. In the semi-finals, Shen lost to the No. 4 seeded player Shubham Soni 6-4, 7-5, while Baumann lucked out against Dominik Wrona, the 6th seeded player. Baumann was also seeded No. 2 in the under 16 singles event. After being away for most of the summer, and only been back in town three days prior, his lack of training told the whole story. Having lost his under 18 singles match earlier in the morning, he chalked up another semi-finals defeat later in the day. This time it was against No. 3 seed John Schriemer of Kelowna.

Other notable results: Sam Yan advanced to the consolation draw finals of the under 16 singles. The result was as close as it can be. Yan lost 8-7 to Nikola Surjanovic of Burnaby. In the girls under 16 singles consolation draw, Giselle Bonney, seeded No. 2, lost in her first round main draw match to Nicole Wrona. Bonney later redeemed herself by winning her consolation event. Jenny Jai defeated club mate Holly Tsui, 8-4, in the girls under 14 singles consolation finals.
