Coquitlam Junior Spring Challenger | The recently concluded Coquitlam Junior Spring Challenger tournament once again proved to be a tug of war with Mother Nature. What was already a cool and wet April, continued into May. Three days of great summer-like weather starting on the Wednesday before the start of the tournament gave us a false hope that all will be well after all. Not. The weather turned wet on Saturday and washed away 7.5 hours of match play. We lost another 2 hours on Sunday morning. There were certainly a lot of squeegeeing work to be done. Matches did continue on both Saturday and Sunday, but the day's temperature remained cool.
Without having to make much adjustment to the match format, this tournament managed to complete the last match before the end of the afternoon on Victoria Day. Our club juniors dominated the boys under 18 singles event, with 3 of the 4 semi-finalists belonging to our club's junior program. William Baumann, 17, completed his third 3-set match in as many days, winning his semi-final against the number one seed and 17 years old club mate, Ken Zhang, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. This victory set him up against his younger brother Alexander, 15, for another Baumann brothers showdown in the final. As this could be the final chapter between these two brothers in junior tournaments, Alexander did not want to miss his chance to claim an official victory against William. And he did just that. He cruised to victory with a 6-4, 6-2 straight sets win. Zhang, the top seed in this event, beat Jack Xie of Burnaby, 6-0, 6-1 and Clint Mofakham of Richmond 6-4, 6-0 before coming up short against the older Baumann in the semi-finals. For more of the boys under 18 finals, see Big Brother vs Little Brother Round 3.
Our girls did well too. Jayden Nielsen, 11, seeded number two, romped through her first two under 12 matches with confidence. She beat Kaileigh Chow 6-0, 6-0, and Anna Venediktova 6-2, 6-0. Nielsen had a much closer match against Kristen Li of Vancouver in the semi-finals. She beat the number four seed, 7-5, 6-4. In the final she met the third seeded player across the net. Although she started off really well, and moved to a 3-0 lead in the first set, her focus got off-tracked. She eventually lost the match, 6-3, 6-1, to Sunny Liu of Vancouver. In the under 18, Vanessa Mansfield, 15, disposed of Stellar Song of Burnaby 2-6, 7-6, 10-5 in her first round match, and beat club mate, Anastassia Krasnova, 15, next in the quarter-finals, 6-2, 6-7, 6-2. In the semi-finals, unseeded Dahee Suh of Port Moody, stopped her with a 6-1, 6-0 win. Suh had earlier beaten the number one seeded player, Monica Mograth of Delta, 6-3, 6-4.
