2 Gold, 4 Silver + 2 bronze

Duncan Road Trip 2010  |  The trip started off with me being late. I thought I was awake after my alarm sounded, but felt back to sleep. As Ryan Sandrin pointed out, I was 22 minutes late after missing the 6 am rendezvous at the club. We still managed to catch the 8 am ferry from Tsawwassen. I knew the day was going to be hot and it was quite muggy as well. The first day saw everyone in action except Jedi Tetki, who was seeded in both the under 16 and 18 singles. Like the year before, I was not expecting our team to haul in many trophies this year either. We have a young group of juniors on this trip. Young and inexperience. Kevin Baumann, Willis Lee, and Jenny Jia are all between the ages of 10 and 11. Then there are Giselle Bonney and Jia who had never played in a tournament before.

Bonney defeated Nanaimo's Marlena Boyle and club mate Anastassia Krasnova before setting up her final match against Nina Radisavjevic of Victoria in the under 16 singles. Bonney moved quickly to a 4-1 lead in the first set. She fought off her opponent late charged and took the first set. In the second set she had to fight hard after falling behind. She finally clinched the winner's trophy by taking the final three games. She won 6-4, 7-5. Krasnova played in both the girls under 14 and 16 singles. She won one of the three matches in the under 18 events. Against Marlena Boyle, she won the match without having lost a game. In the under 14 event, she lost both of her matches in three sets. Krasnova lost 2-6, 6-2, 6-2, to Lindy Boyle and 6-2, 6-7, 6-2 to Madison Macedo.

Jia joined Giselle in the winner's circle when she defeated Vancouver's Jamie Picken 6-1, 6-3 in her final under 14 singles match. She also picked up a finalist trophy when she lost to Jamie's younger sister in the under 12 singles event. Megan Picken beat Jia 6-4, 6-3.

Over on the boys' side, Sandrin, Ken Zhang, Alexander and William Baumann and Jedi Tetik represented the club in the under 18 draw. Tetik seeded third, reached the final after an easy win over Scott Bocking of Chemainus. In the final Tetik lost to the second seed Aiden Eakins of Mill Bay,  6-4, 7-5. William reached the semi-finals when he defeated club mate Sandrin in their quarter-final match. He faced Eakins in the final four but could not turn the match in his favour. In last year's under 16 event, Baumann defeated Eakins for a spot in the semi-finals. Sandrin moved past John Ebert in his first round match. Two unlucky juniors, Zhang and the younger Baumann, Alex, lost in the first round. Zhang lost to the German Arne Kaufmann in three sets 6-3, 4-6, 6-2. In Alexander's match, he took an early 3-0 lead but could not capitalized on it as Victoria's Lars Bornemann changed things around to his favour. Alexander lost 6-3, 6-2.

In the consolation draw, Alexander had to faced the number one seed Socrates Bousbouras for the second time in less than three hours. Bousbouras had problems arriving on time for his first round match in the main draw. In this second encounter, after losing the first set 6-2, Alex played an attacking game in the second set. After leading 3-2, and 5-3, he could not close out the set on his serve at 5-4. Falling behind at 5-6, he held serve to take the set to a tie-breaker. He forged to a 4-0 and then a 6-3 lead. Once again Bousbouras came back to tie at 6-6, and erased the lead Alexander's had in the tie-breaker. Finally, Alexander sent a backhand down the line beyond the baseline and gave Bousbouras yet another win in as many hours. Boushouras win set up the consolation final against Zhang. This was moved indoors to Arbutus Ridge the next morning due to the rain. This time, there was not much of a contest from Zhang as Bousbouras wrapped the match up quickly.

In the under 16 singles, our team was represented by Alexander, Sandrin, and Tetik. Sandrin suffered an easy defeat at the hands of the German player Kaufmann. He almost turned things around in his consolation match against the third seeded West Vancouver player, Daniel Foxcroft. Foxcroft had earlier lost to Alexander in his first match in the main draw. Sandrin put up a good fight, sending the match to a third set. After leading 5-4, he just could not finish the match the way he wanted it. Sandrin lost 6-2, 3-6, 7-5. Alexander reached the semi-finals, beating Nyles Moisson of Mill Bay and third seeded Daniel Foxcroft along the way. In his semi-finals, he challenged the number one seed, Socrates Bousbouras, for the first time. Bousbouras is currently ranked number 19 in the 16's in the province. Alexander managed to stay close to Bousbouras throughout the first set but lost it 6-4. The second set slipped away quickly. Boushouras won 6-4, 6-1. In the meantime, the second seeded Tetik beat Myles Rivera-Flam of Sacramento, California 7-5, 7-6 to set up the final against Bousbouras. He fought hard to take the first set 6-4, and kept the momentum through the second set. Tetik kept pace with Bousbouras in the second set but lost it 6-4 on a service break. Tetik's game began to slip away in the third set as Bousbouras took charge of the match and won it 4-6, 6-4, 6-1.

The youngest Baumann brother on this trip is the 10 year old Kevin. He was glad to be part of this year's team to these grass courts. He put up a good challenge against Victor Stepanov of Victoria, but lost 7-5, 6-3. In his consolation match he was determined to win his first match on grass. After he lost the first set 6-4 to Tony Liu, he stepped up his game and won the next set 6-3 to tie up the match. In the third set both boys stayed even on the score until 5-4 when Kevin made an unforced error on the backhand side that settled the match. After walking off the court, an emotional Kevin had to be consoled by one of his brothers. Kevin's doubles partner Willie Lee shared the same fate in the under 12 singles. Lee lost both of his matches on grass. His first match was to Brentwood Bay's Aaron Diemer in the main draw and to Elom Paradis of Richmond in the consolation round. Both boys teamed up for some doubles action in the under 14 category. Playing against much older boys, both Kevin and Lee had little chance for an upset in both their doubles matches.

In the boys under 18 doubles event, William and Zhang lost 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 to Bornemann and Kaufmann in their final match to take home the finalist trophy. Earlier Alexander and Sandrin had missed their chance to beat the eventual winners. After leading much of the first set, including a 4-1, and 5-3 score, the team crumpled under pressure and lost 7-6, 6-2. They had earlier beaten the doubles team of Eakins and Ebert 6-4, 6-1.
