Defending Champion Battles Challenger in the Finals

CTC Junior Club Closed | Defending champion Ilya Tihanenoks faced his younger challenger, 13 year old Alexander Baumann at the recently completed junior club tournament final. Tihanenoks, 18, wanted nothing to spoil his final junior match before leaving the junior ranks. Both players fought hard to reach the club's under 18 junior finals.

Tihanenoks met Ray Wang, 14, in the semi-finals. These two players split the first two sets with an identical score of 6-2, and battled closely in the third. Wang threatened to move ahead in the deciding set more than once, but Tihanenoks fought hard and came out the winner in the third and took the match with a score of 6-2, 2-6, 6-4.

The other semi-finals was an all brothers affair. 16 year old William Baumann, the older sibling had to play his brother Alex to determine which one goes into the final. This match was nothing short of having the bragging rights in the family. Also the younger Baumann was eager to show he is all grown up and can play with the big boys. Alex started the match off slowly, as he was having trouble stringing his points together, and lost the first set 6-3. In the second set Alex found his hitting zone and took the second 6-3 to tie the match at one set a piece. In the third set, after falling behind 1-2, Willie retired from his match citing feeling ill and fatigue.

So the final match came down to Ilya versus Alex. So who won? In the first set Baumann was the more consistent player, which drove Tihanenoks into frequent audible frustration. With a set up, an upset was possible for Baumann to take the title from the defending champion. In the second set Tihanenoks determined to stay focus and remain positive, battled back to take the set 6-3. With each player even at one set a piece, anything can happen. After splitting the first 4 games, Tihanenoks broke to take the lead, and held the lead till the end. Ilya retained his title with a final score of 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.
